Shah was tasked by President Obama to lead the United States response to the disaster, launching one of the largest humanitarian efforts in history. The response is credited with slowing the rate of new infections faster than had been projected, which prevented significant transmission across Africa and to other parts of the world. In addition to overseeing America’s response to international crises and humanitarian assistance, Shah worked to reform how USAID conducted business. He pioneered a new model of development that included more innovation and engagement with the private sector, all focused on ending extreme poverty around the world.
